Boren Award

The Boren Awards provides funding for study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests. It is open to U.S. undergraduate and graduate students who commit to seek work in the federal government for a specified period of time. CBYX Young Professionals

The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) for Young Professionals is a fellowship funded by the German Bundestag and U.S. Department of State, that annually provides 75 American and 75 German young professionals, between the ages of 18½–24, the opportunity to spend one year in each other’s countries, studying, interning, and living with hosts on a cultural immersion program.

 

Churchill Scholarship

The Churchill Scholarship is for U.S. citizen graduating seniors or alumni who earned their undergraduate degree within the last 12 months. The award includes full funding for a one-year Master’s degree in a STEM field at the University of Cambridge, England. Applicants should be extremely high-GPA students with substantial research achievements in a particular area of STEM. Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship funds U.S. undergraduate and graduate students for intensive summer language instruction and cultural imemersion in 13 critical need foreign languages.

 

DAAD Scholarships

In addition to RISE Germany and RISE Professional, DAAD provides several other awards to support research, coursework, and graduate studies in Germany.

 

DAAD RISE Germany

RISE stands for Research Internships in Science and Engineering. RISE Germany offers undergraduate students from North American, British and Irish universities the opportunity to complete a summer research internship at top German universities and research institutions. Interns receive a monthly stipend to cover every day costs. To apply, you must be currently enrolled at a university/college as undergraduate student in the field of biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, earth sciences or engineering (or a closely related field). You must have completed at least 2 years of your degree program by the time of the internship placement, and plan to continue as a student in the academic year following your placement.

DAAD RISE Professional

RISE Professional offers summer research internships in Germany to Master’s and Ph.D. students at companies and non-university research institutions with strong relations to industry. The program is open for students in the field of biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, earth science, engineering or a closely related field. All participants receive a scholarship from DAAD and an additional stipend from their host company/institution to help cover living expenses. Funding is possible for a period up to six months depending on the internship in summer or fall. German language requirements vary according to the internship placement. Undergraduates who are Alumni from the RISE Germany program and recent graduates (depending on the internship) are also eligible to apply.

EPFL Excellence Research Internship Program

The École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) ranks as one of the most successful institutions in Europe. The EPFL Excellence Research Internship Program (ERIP) offers laboratory internships of three months to outstanding students. Students at the Bachelor’s level are accepted, and applicants must have at least completed their 2nd year of their undergarduate degree when they start the internship, be enrolled as regular students during the whole length of the internship, and be nominated by their home institution. Internships are generally three months long and should be part of the student curriculum. EPFL offers additional summer research programs, which can be viewed at their website.

Ertegun Graduate Scholarship Programme in the Humanities

The Ertegun Graduate Scholarship funds graduate studies leading to a masters or doctoral degree in the arts and humanities at Oxford University. Rising seniors, graduate students, or recent alumni of any nationality who meet both the Ertegun program criteria and their chosen program of study criteria at Oxford should apply.

Fellowships for Americans in the Nordic Countries

The American Scandinavian Foundation provides year-long fellowships of up to $23,000 and 1-3 month fellowships of up to $5,000 to graduate students and academic professionals interested in pursuing research or creative-arts projects in the Nordic region. Seniors, graduate students, and alumni who are US citizens or permanent residents are eligible to apply.

Fulbright US Student Program

The Fulbright US Student Program funds a year abroad in 150+ different countries to participate in English teaching assistantships, graduate studies, or independent research. Rising seniors, graduate students, or recent alumni who are U.S. citizens may apply. Fulbright-Hays DDRA Fellowship Program

The Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowship Program provides grants to fund individual doctoral students who conduct research in other countries, in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of six to 12 months. Projects deepen research knowledge on and help the nation develop capability in areas of the world not generally included in U.S. curricula. Projects focusing on Western Europe are not supported. Current doctoral students who are U.S. citizens and who have been admitted to candidacy can apply.

Fulbright US Student English Teaching Assistanship

The Fulbright US Student Program provides English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) grants to 80+ countries. Rising seniors, graduate students, or recent alumni who are U.S. citizens may apply. ETAs serve as assistants to local English teachers (and sometimes as lead teachers) in their host countries, and - depending on the country - may be placed at a variety of educational levels, from K-12 to post-secondary. The ETA grants seek out students with experience in community engagement, leadership, and teaching, tutoring, or mentoring (in some limited cases, countries may require some classroom teaching experience), making them a great fit for individuals seeking meaningful service experiences abroad. Fulbright ETA grantees have gone on to PhD programs, law school, medical school, and all manners of professional pathways. Fulbright US Student Study/Research Award

The Fulbright US Student Program awards Study/Research grants in 150+ countries. Rising seniors, graduate students, or recent alumni who are U.S. citizens may apply. These grants offer two major pathways: independent research (in affiliation with a host country university) or graduate degree enrollment. Some countries offer both of these options, while others only offer one or the other. Specialty awards in specific disciplines, such as business, public health, policy, and the arts are available in select countries. The vast majority of grants are open to all disciplines. Fulbright UK Summer Institutes

The Fulbright UK Summer Institutes fund travel and participation in a 3-5 week themed summer institute (available on a variety of topics each year) in the United Kingdom. First-year and sophomore students that are US citizens with a minimum 3.7 GPA, a history of demonstrated financial need, and little to no study or travel experience outside of North America should apply.

Gates Cambridge

The Gates Cambridge is open to U.S. and non-U.S. citizens who are seniors, alumni, or graduate/professional students. The award fully funds one to four years of study in any field, leading to a graduate degree at the University of Cambridge, England. The Gates Foundation especially seeks applicants with a focus on improving the lives of others through their work.

 

Benjamin Gilman

The Benjamin Gilman Scholarship is for U.S. citizen recipients of the Pell Grant, to support them in study abroad programs. The award is for up to $5,000, with a possible additional $3,000 for applicants studying critical need languages during their study abroad.

Humanity In Action

The Humanity in Action Fellowship brings together international groups of fellows to study minority rights and produce original research on tolerance and democratic values. The award funds five-week summer programs in six different cities in the US and Europe for sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students, and recent alumni from (or studying in) the US and other select countries.

Jennings Family Brave Companions Award

The Jennings Famly Brave Companions Award is an internal donor-funded award that provides up to $6000 for a 4+ week summer study abroad program in a developing country. Sophomores and juniors who are underrepresented, first generation college students, faced a significant obstacle, and/or who have demonstrated financial need should apply.

 

Henry Luce

The Luce Scholarship is for U.S. citizens under the age of 30 who are young professionals, seniors, and graduate/professional students. The award fully funds a one-year internship in East or Southeast Asia for those with little academic or personal experience with Asia.

 

Marshall

The Marshall Scholarship is for U.S. citizens with an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.7. Seniors, graduate/professional students, and alumni may apply within two years of earning their undergraduate degree. The award fully funds one to three years of study leading to a degree at any British university. McCall MacBain Scholarship

The McCall MacBain Scholarship fully funds an eligible master's degree in a variety of fields at McGill University in Canada. Applicants must meet GPA (and other) requirements of their target program at McGill to be eligible. Seniors and alumni under 30 may apply. Mitchell

The George J. Mitchell Scholarship is for U.S. citizens under the age of 30. The award fully funds one year of postgraduate study in the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland. Princeton in Asia

Princeton in Asia (PiA) fellowships place successful applicants in a variety of fellowship positions across East, South, and Southeast Asia to foster mutual appreciation and cross-cultural understanding between the United States and Asia. Applicants can be graduating seniors or recent alumni and must have professional proficiency in English (English teaching positions require native or near-native English-speaking ability). Candidates may have master's degrees, but not terminal or professional degrees (e.g., Ph.D., JD, MD). Applicants may be U.S. citizens or citizens of other countries, but must be able to obtain a visa to their targeted host country.

Rhodes

The Rhodes Scholarship is for U.S. citizens or citizens from 63 other countries under the age of 24 who are seniors, graduate/professional students, or recent alumni. The Rhodes fully funds two to three years of study leading to a degree at the University of Oxford, England.

 

Schwarzman Scholarship

This scholarship provides a year of study leading to a Master's degree in Public Policy, Economics and Business, or International Studies at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. All courses are taught in English.

 

ThinkSwiss

ThinkSwiss is scholarship that funds an 8-12 week research internship in Switzerland in any field. Sophomores, juniors, seniors, and master’s students can apply.

Yenching Scholarship

The Yenching Academy of Peking University aims to build bridges between China and the rest of the world through an interdisciplinary master's program in China Studies, with the goal of shaping new generations of global citizens with a nuanced understanding of China. The Yenching Academy provides full fellowships to its Scholars, and offers them a wide array of interdisciplinary courses on China within broadly defined fields of the humanities and social sciences. Working closely with their academic mentors, Yenching Scholars create their own study paths by choosing courses from six research areas. They participate in a variety of extracurricular activities and field studies, organized by the Yenching Academy, and designed by scholars themselves. Applicants must be graduating seniors or recent alumni with English proficiency.
